Computer Technology Association Hall of Famer and Paralympic Medalist Mike May Joins Blind Travel Foundation Board
NEW YORK, NY – We are excited to announce that Mike May has joined our board. He has served as an advisor to Blind Travel Foundation for the past year and played a pivotal role on our 2024 grant winner selection committee.
Mr. May is a pillar of the blind community, a travel expert, a Paralympic medalist in skiing, and is in the Consumer Technology Association’s Hall of Fame. After losing his vision to an accident at the age of three, Mr. May received a successful corneal transplant, partial vision was restored in one eye when he was in his mid-forties. This experience is chronicled in the fascinating biography Crashing Through by Robert Kurson. Mike’s storied business career recently included serving as the Chief Evangelist of Good Maps, a service that creates maps for indoor navigation.
As a board member, Mr. May will continue to share his expertise, travel stories, and connections with Blind Travel Foundation. He plans to start a podcast series discussing technology tips and tricks for blind and low vision travelers that will also include interviews with Blind Travel Foundation’s grant winners and blind influencers.
Blind Travel Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by Mike Walsh in 2021 with the mission of giving individuals who are blind or have low vision the opportunity to explore the world, engage with others, and educate people about their lifestyles and experiences. Mike was diagnosed with Usher syndrome in 1997. By 2014, his vision had deteriorated to the point where he was no longer driving and used a cane to get around. He launched a social media campaign to crowdsource ideas of places he should see before his vision became any worse. During the resulting travels, he conducted interviews with other people experiencing vision loss and created a blog. He established Blind Travel Foundation to give other people the chance to take a meaningful trip and produce educational content to advance the understanding of blindness and vision impairment.
