Top 5 Application Tips

Five things the application committee looks for.

1. Lead With Impact and Show You Can Execute

We are looking for projects that create meaningful, positive impact for the blind and visually impaired community, especially projects that result in resources people can use for years to come.

Once we are excited by your idea, we look for clear evidence that you and your team can successfully deliver it.

If your project involves creating content (such as video, audio, or written guides), include examples of past work.

For example, if you are proposing a video series, share one or two links to videos you have already produced in the Links section of the application. Ideally, these examples should be related to your proposed topic.

2. Read the Frequently Asked Questions (Even If You Have Read Them Before)

Our Frequently Asked Questions have been updated. Please review them carefully before submitting your application.

3. Review Past Projects and Connect With Past Grant Winners

Review projects that have previously received funding. In your application, consider explaining:

  • What you found compelling about past projects
  • What you learned from them
  • What you would approach differently or improve upon

If possible, reach out to past grant winners and ask for application advice. Many are happy to share their experience.

4. Design a Project That Actively Involves the Community

The Blind Travel Foundation has an engaged community that is eager to learn from and participate in projects. We are most active on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, and our combined following, including our email newsletter, exceeds 5,000.

In your application, consider addressing the following questions:

  • Will you involve the community online or in person during the project, not only at the end?
  • Will you share progress updates and invite feedback throughout the process?
  • Do you have a plan to engage our audience across one or more platforms?

5. Attend a Zoom Question and Answer Session Before the Deadline

We strongly recommend attending a Zoom Q&A session if possible. These sessions provide valuable insight into what we fund and how to strengthen your proposal.

Additional Tips

Partners Are Welcome

Applicants are encouraged to work with partners who can strengthen their project. In one past case, a grant winner later joined a partner organization professionally.

Plan for Accessibility From the Start

If your project includes content creation, demonstrate a clear understanding of accessibility for blind and visually impaired audiences. If you are working with a content producer, identify who they are and explain why they are qualified to produce accessible content.

Pressure-Test Your Idea

Ask friends, family members, mentors, and community members what they would want to learn from or use. Their feedback can help refine your concept and improve your deliverables.

Explain the Importance of the $10,000 Grant

It may be helpful to explain how meaningful $10,000 would be to your project. Consider addressing:

  • Would this project happen without the grant?
  • What specifically will the $10,000 allow you to do?
  • How many people will be impacted, and how?
